Be conscious of the level of a jam before jumping in at full blast. But it’s generally fine to stand or sit on the periphery (“outer circle”) of a jam, playing along quietly (perhaps learning the tune!) and not getting in the way. Sometimes you may be invited to join an ongoing jam. Good taste is better than raw speed any day! Keep the beat.ĥ. If tunes are falling apart rhythmically, it’s better to slow them down. It’s good manners to let the person calling a tune start it at his/her tempo, Sometimes a group may agree to play a tune slowly at first, and then speed it up. ![]() Some jams are rather speedy! Occasionally, jams are designated as “half-speed” or “slow.” Beginner jams are also slower. Jams may vary in their choice of tempos, usually depending on the level of the players. On the other hand, some players play multiple styles, and their jams may wander among styles (which may be fine, or may cause problems).Ĥ. An Irish jam shouldn’t suddenly change into a Southern Oldtime jam, or a bluegrass jam into a Scottish jam. Other jams have no fixed leader, in which case the tunes are often selected and led by the players in some order, such as going clockwise around the circle.ģ. Leaders call or coordinate the selection of tunes, including medleys, and may call out arrangements on the fly. Some jams have a leader (either appointed or de facto). Players take turns playing instrumental breaks: Bluegrass, Swing, Texas, Blues, Rock stylesĢ. Come with me, grab a cold beer or maybe even two, light up a cigarette… and the rest is for you to find out. It was amazing, it was great, it felt like freedom, it smelled like cigarettes and beer, and the music was complete satisfaction for my music-loving soul. It will be a lie to say words cannot describe this. The madness was real and exciting, it just escalated so quickly. And then at this same moment I reached my desired destination two guys jumped from the audience to the stage grabbed a guitar and started playing alongside with the soloist. I started making my way through the crowd to the front of the stage driven by the urge to see who stands behind this heavenly sound. ![]() Right from the door I was enchanted by the crazy guitar solo that was happening on stage. Happens that my dear roommate is one of the regular Wednesday jammers, so he took me on adventure to show me what is it to be part of this world. It is also not only those we met on the festival, but every enthusiast is welcome to join the stage and every loving visitor to enjoy the ride. Mukkes also hosts the Wednesday Jam Sessions, where you can find those crazy musicians from Psy-Fi still jamming and making love with their musical instruments. The music assortment is wide, the audience is enthusiastic, the sound is good, and the beers are cold. It is a place that welcomes everyone with taste for ‘real music’ as they say for themselves. Mukkes is by far know as an alternative rock café on the Grote Hoogstraat. I wanted to know more and listen more, thus this trail took me to a small smoky bar in the heart of Leeuwarden.
